METHODOLOGY OF SUBJECT CLASSIFICATION IN POLISH

GENERAL LIBRARIES

In thc paper concepts of subject classification in catalogues in generał libraries in Poland have been outlined.

Adam Łysakowski, who started compiling subject catalogues in university libraries in Vilnius and in Warsaw in the 20s, was the first specialist in Poland to work out a concept of subject classification. He outlined the principles of his catalogue in Subject catalogue: a manuał published in 1946. His textbook still remains the major instruction manuał in subject classification of docu-ments in generał libraries and in compiling a current national bibliography.

Another concept was presented by Izydora Dąmbska, who in the years 1946-1958 was in charge of the subject catalogue in the Gdańsk Library of The Polish Academy of Sciences, and whose methodological approach differs slightly from the notions presented by A. Łysakowski in his manuał.

A new „Instruction for subject classification and subject catalogues” is being prepared at pre-sent. It is based on the above mentioned two theories, but alśo takes ińto consideration world trends in subject classification, the appropriate standards of cataloguing of documents and requirements of automation.
