Patient position:
Supine, with the legs extended. Stabilize the
opposite iliac crest. Full knee extension by
the quadriceps stabilizes the knee. Flex the
hip with slight abduction and slight lateral
(external) rotation.
Examiner pressure:
Against the anteromedial leg in the direction
of extension and slight abduction, directly
opposite the line of pull of the psoas major
from the proximal attachment on the lumbar
spine to the distal attachment on the lesser
trochanter of the femur.
Note: Although the iliacus takes its origin
from the ilium and the psoas major from the
lumbar spine, the two muscles are often
functionally considered as one unit.
