MY COMMENT:
Obviously, there is some lexis which needs to be pre-taught or there should be an introduction to the
topic before the listening part. The task is designed for mixed abilities classes because there are
different kinds of questions. Open-ended questions are defiantly more demanding than true/false
and multiple choice ones. For this reason, we should be aware that some of the pupils won’t be able
to answer all of these questions.
What is more, I strongly suggest doing this exercise either in 6
th
grade or even in middle school.
Emma talks clearly and not too fast; however, this is an authentic material and the language used in
the interview may be troublesome for the less advanced pupils. What is good about authentic
material is that there is plenty of it and you can adjust it to your needs. I found this interview on
YouTube and I simply cut out a few scenes so that I made it shorter.
Finally, you can let your students listen to the recording more than just 2 times. If they need it, allow
them. Of course, it won’t be that effective in terms of getting the information quickly but surely the
pupils will understand more. You can always prepare a discussion about Emma, Harry Potter or books
and films. Then, the pupils will have the opportunity to use the new vocab and lexis from the task.
