Chapter 9 — Exam Question 1
Suppose your organisation develops a GIS application for road maintenance. What
would be the consequences of using geo-referenced versus geo-coded image data as a
backdrop?
Answer
A geo-referenced image has coordinates but the orientation of the image is not
the same asthe one of the co-ordinate system. A geo-coded image is resam-
pled such that the orientation of the image coordinates (row, columns) is aligned
with the co-ordinate system, e.g., X, Y. If a geo-referenced image is applied as
backdrop, then other data with the same coordinates can not be combined on a
screen. If a geo-coded image is applied, then other data with the same coordina-
tes can be visualised together.
