Track 20: Listening Test for Unit 8
[Edith (older posh woman); S = Simon (actor type)]
Edith: I went to an all-girls school in the north of England. It was a boarding school, very far from home, and my parents sent me away when I was nine. I don't know how they did it. My mother went there, and she loved it. I think she thought I would love it too, but I didn't like it at all. It was very traditional, and there were lots of rules. We had to keep our bedrooms clean and tidy, and we had to do two or three hours of homework every night. We didn't have any freedom at all. We couldn't do anything, or go anywhere. It felt like prison to me. I wrote to my mother many, many times, and asked her to come and take me home, but she didn't. I decided not to send my children away to school. They all went to our local school.
Simon: My school was started in the 1960s by a famous artist and philosopher. He had very unusual and modern ideas about education. The main idea was to give the students freedom to choose what they wanted to study. There were no traditional lessons - in fact we didn't have to go to lessons if we didn't want to. I hated Maths, so I just didn't go. At the end of school, I failed all of my A-level exams and couldn't go to university. To be honest, I think it was all a bit crazy. My sister became an artist and I'm an actor, but I don't think we were prepared for the real world. It was very expensive for a bad education!
