Track 30: Listening Test for Unit 12
[P = presenter; M = Michael Aziz]
P: Most Hollywood movie stars have one. Pop stars have them. The US President probably does, too. I'm talking about fashion stylists. But what is a stylist, and why would a normal person like you and I need one? Well, with me today to answer that question is my first guest, Michael Aziz, who is a personal stylist with his own TV programme starting next week. Welcome, Michael.
M: Thank you.
P: Michael, what exactly do you do?
M: That's a very good question! Throughout history, people have used their appearance to express themselves. But what if your clothes are giving the wrong message? They might be saying, `I don't want anyone to notice me' or `I have more important things to think about than the way I look.' Many people are successful in other areas of their life, but are feeling stuck stylewise. Basically I help people dress in a way that makes them feel comfortable, confident, and look great!
P: Do you think we place too much importance on appearances? I mean, in this country we make judgements about someone's social class, job and income by the way they dress.
M: Maybe, but I don't think you can judge people by their appearance so easily any more. Nowadays, style is more casual, more egalitarian than in the past. And first impressions aren't always right, you know!
I: Who do you think is the most stylish woman today?
M: Kate Moss always looks great.
I: What about the most stylish man?
M: Well, Italian men always look amazingly well-groomed and well-dressed, but for me, George Clooney is the most stylish man around today.
P: And finally, Michael, what does your style say about you?
M: I'm an ageing wild child who doesn't want to grow up!
