Dolphins are one of the most intelligent and popular sea animals. They look like fish, but they are actually mammals. They breathe air like humans do. There are around 40 different kinds of dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins are one of the most common kinds. Bottlenose dolphins usually live in warm water.
Dolphins make many different noises. This talking and singing is just one way they communicate with each other. They also use body language, jumping up to five metres in the air, or touching heads.
They can see and hear very well, but not smell.
Female dolphins have babies every two to three years. When a baby dolphin is born it is about one metre long and weighs about 20 kilograms. The baby usually stays with its mother for six years. Male dolphins are larger than females and can be as long as four metres and weigh more than 400 kilograms. Dolphins usually live for about 45 years.
Bottlenose dolphins are very sociable animals. They swim in groups of about 12 animals which are called `pods'. Sometimes pods join with other pods to form larger groups called `herds'. Herds sometimes have as many as 200 to 300 animals in them.
Dolphins are friendly to humans, and sometimes go near people and boats. There are many stories of dolphins helping humans. But they are wild and beautiful animals, and we must respect them.
