Track 30: Listening Test for Unit 12

[P = Paul; L = Louise]

P: A really funny thing happened to me two weeks ago.

L: What?

P: Well, I'd been at work all morning, in a meeting, and I really needed a break from the office. I decided to go out for lunch. It had started to rain two days before, and it was still raining heavily.

L: I remember.

P: So, I took my umbrella and started walking along to a café near my office. Suddenly I heard a voice just behind me. It sounded just like my brother, Frank, who lives in a village near here. You've met him before, haven't you?

L: Yeah, I know Frank. I met him at your birthday party.

P: Oh yes. I remember. Anyway, the voice said, `Paul, help me.'

L: Oh!

P: I was really shocked. I turned round, but there was nobody there. I had a very strong feeling that Frank was in trouble. I went back to the office and phoned his home. But there was no answer. Then I tried his mobile phone. Again, no answer. I started to feel worried. So I got in the car and drove out of town towards the village where he lives. When I got near, the road was blocked by a police car, and I could see the road was covered with water. The police told me the river had completely flooded the village, and I couldn't go on. I told them I hadn't heard from my brother, who lived down by the river.

L: Oh no!

P: So they sent some men out in a boat to look. They found Frank on the roof of the house, surrounded by water. He'd been there all night!

L: That's absolutely incredible!

P: Yeah, I know.
