Track 10: Listening Test for Unit 4
Although Thailand moved its official New Year to the first of January in 1943, Thais still celebrate Songkhran, the old Thai New Year from the thirteenth to the fifteenth of April. It's one of the best festivals in Thailand, and is a time when families spend time together, and many people travel back to their home villages. The new year is a time to make everything clean and new, and forget the mistakes of the last year. People clean their houses, and pay special attention to older members of the family by giving them new clothes.
On the fifteenth of April people get up early in the morning to visit the temple for the ceremony of Rod Nam Dam Nua. They wash statues of the Buddha, offer food to the monks at the temple, and put water on the monks' hands. Everyone then goes into the streets and throws water at each other in cups, buckets, or even with a hose! This is meant to bring good luck and literally wash away the old year. To add to the fun, coloured chalk is mixed with the water and may be put on your face.
There's a fantastic party atmosphere, with parades, parties, music, and people laughing and dancing in the streets. Everyone joins in with the fun. Nobody escapes - police, business people, and especially tourists, all get soaking wet. The cool water may even be a relief in the hot summer weather!
