I: Who's your best friend, Toni?

T: Her name's Mary Brown.

I: How did you meet?

T: We met at school twenty years ago, and hit it off straight away. Mary and I have been through a lot together since then - marriage, children, divorce. We've known each other for the whole of our adult lives! But our friendship is still as strong as ever.

I: How often do you see each other?

T: Mary lives in Scotland, a hundred miles away from here, so although we don't actually see each other very much, we talk to each other every week on the phone, and we try to meet up every two or three months.

I: What sort of things do you do together?

T: Lunches, shopping, theatre visits in London, that kind of thing. But mostly we talk. I never run out of things to say to Mary! And we always go on holiday together. We're going to Malta this summer. I can't wait!

I: Have you ever fallen out?

T: Not really. We drifted apart a bit during Mary's marriage. I didn't like her husband, Dave, and he didn't like me. I think he was jealous of our friendship. But since Mary and Dave got divorced ten years ago, I've seen a lot more of Mary.
