Track 28: Listening Test for Unit 11
[I = Interviewer; B = Bert]
I: Congratulations, Bert. You turned a hundred last week.
B: Thanks.
I: You celebrated your birthday with a party for a hundred and twenty friends and family, including your wife, Sarah Ann, your three children, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
B: Two parties and a lunch, actually. We had champagne and a big cake. It was almost like a wedding!
I: And how long have you been married?
B: Sixty years next year. My wife's a young `un though. She's only ninety-six.
I: Bert, you're still very active. You both play golf and enjoy going to the pub. What's the secret of a long life?
B: I don't know. The only thing I can say is that all my life I have been happy. My advice is to take life slowly, don't worry about anything.
I: Looking back on your life, would you do anything differently?
B: I wish I could have spent more time with my children when they were young. But I went away during the war, you see. I was in the Air Force and I was stationed in Lincolnshire. When I came back home they had grown up. But, I can't change that. No regrets. We did what we had to do.
I: What are your best memories?
B: Family life, and the wonderful places I've travelled to. If I could go back, I would start travelling at a younger age. My wife and I made our first trip abroad when I was sixty-five. After that we went every year, but it's more difficult now. We did go to Australia a few years ago, though. One of our granddaughters lives there.
