Time

Lead-in

  1. Teacher asks students about their habits.

  2. Then, she asks them if the habits of their parents and grandparents, when they were 16-17 years old, were different from the habits of the students. If yes, how were they different?

3 mins

Presentation

Teacher presents the students different ways of talking about habits and typical behaviour:

  1. “Will” is used to talk about habits and typical behaviour in the present.

Example: My mom will spend hours talking on the phone to her four sisters every day.

  1. “Would” is used to talk about past habits and typical behaviour in the past.

Example: When I was a child, I would cry before every meal other than sweets.

  1. “Will” and “would” can also be used to express annoyance at certain habits.

Whenever I look at her, she will smile stupidly.

Tom would beat me when we shared one room.

  1. “Used to” is similar to “would”. But we only use “used to” to talk about states.

She would used to be my best friend at school.

I would used to live in that house 15 years ago.
