REVISION: ARTICLES
A/AN
We use a with general nouns (things) which are countable and singular:
I have got a grey cat. (cat = countable, singular)
He's not a very intelligent man. (man = countable, singular)
We do not use a with uncountable or plural nouns, abstract nouns (feelings or ideas) or proper nouns (real names of people and places):
Have we got any rice? (rice = uncountable)
My mother has three tables. (tables = plural)
I love nature. (nature = abstract)
John comes from London. (London/John = proper)
UWAGA! Some uncountable nouns can be used in a countable way:
I'd like to have a coffee ( = one cup of coffee)
Maria likes to have a water at lunchtime ( = one glass of water)
We also do not use a if another word is used to describe the noun ( a determiner) or if a possessive is used:
This is my cat. Where is your cat? (my/your = determiners)
I've got only one friend. (one = determiner)
Where is John's cat? (John's = possessive)
We use an when a noun begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) or a vowels sound:
He is an electrician. (electrician = vowel)
He went to a university in England. (university = vowel)
He is an MP [Member of Parliament]. (MP = 'em-pee' = vowel sound)
It was an historical occasion. (historian = istorian = vowel sound)
Practice 1
Look at these nouns. Are they general (G), plural (P), singular (S), proper (Pr) or abstract (A)? The first one is done for you.
Spójrz na te rzeczowniki. Czy są one powszechne (G), w liczbie pojedynczej (S), nazwą własną (Pr) czy abstrakcyjne (A). Pierwszy jest dla Ciebie zrobiony.
