REPORTED SPEECH (2)
Reported questions
Reported questions have a different word order to other reported sentences
1. With question words (who, where, when, what, why, how) we omit do/does/did and the question mark (?) and change other words as with normal reported speech:
DIRECT: What time does the bus arrive?
REPORTED: He asked (me) what time the bus arrived.
If there are no question words, we must add if/whether:
DIRECT: Do you like coffee?
REPORTED: He asked me if/whether I liked coffee.
We can also use the phrase wanted to know:
DIRECT: Do you play football or tennis?
REPORTED: He wanted to know if/whether I played tennis or football.
