MAD MOVEMENTS

The `peace and love' philosophy of the hippies could be seen in their clothes and fashion. The long hair of the men gave them a more feminine look, flowers in the hair and brightly coloured clothes gave the movement a bright, sunny, natural look. One look at a hippy and you knew exactly how they felt about the world.

The mods movement grew up in the West End of London. It was quite a violent, aggressive movement but the look was completely different. Mods cared deeply about their looks and spent money on expensive haircuts and suits. Even their scooters had to be the latest, coolest Italian models.

Goths grew out of the punk movement. They were very much influenced by the singer, Siouxsie Sioux. They looked like characters from a horror film: white skin, black make-up and wild hair but, although they looked scary, they were often peaceful, even shy, vegetarians.

3 Our son is having problems at school. He doesn't work hard and he's just failed his mid-year exams. I don't know what's wrong. He always used to be good at school.

a) Why don't you watch him play? If you know the result, it will be easy to start off a conversation just by saying `Well done' or `Bad luck!'

b) The problem might be something else completely. There may be a romance you don't know about! You have to talk to him and find out what he's thinking about.

c) You should talk to them and explain how you feel. It is always difficult to accept that our children are growing up and becoming independent.

d) Don't worry. This is quite usual. Even our best friends sometimes say cruel things about us behind our backs. Tell her how you feel. She'll probably apologise.
