INTRODUCTION TO CORROSION AND ITS COSTS

1. Pyt. What is the main single factor, which affects the cost of preparation and application

to difficuld vessels areas?

C Odp. The cost of access to an area.

2. Pyt. Oxygen is usualy present where corrosion takes place.What would happen to steel

in an area where no oxygen axist?

C Odp. A different foam of corrosion could take place.

3. Pyt. What determines the rate at which the corrosion process of steel proceeds?

C Odp. The conductivity of the electrolyte, ambient temperature, amount of oxygen present

and yhe relative sizes of cathodic and anodic areas.

4. Pyt. Would cargo remnants, e.g.coal mixed with water affect the corrosion rate?

A Odp. The water in contact with the sulphur in the coal will form an active electrotyle, which

will tend to accelerate the corrosion process.

convertible coating system?

C Odp. The over-coating interval being a product of time and steel temperature to be observsd.

2. Pyt. What should be observed during application of convertible coating systems in cold

weather?

C Odp. That sufficient curing time, ebove the minimum curing temperature of the coating, is

allowed pfior to application of the nex coat.

3. Pyt. What type of corrosion on a coated deck-area would you most worry about?

A Odp. 3 % scattered corrosion.

PLANNING MAINTENANCE

1. Pyt. What are the most important thngs to monitor when inspecting coating conditions?

C Odp. Inspect both intact and corroded areas and also inspect angles, cornes, behind bers

etc.

2. Pyt. What is the key role that you carry out when evaluating steel condition?

C Odp. You need to be able to assess the condition and be able to report that condition

accurately.
