BEADED AMULET PURSES • PROJECT ONE 11
To make the strap. Think oł the strap as a necklace. Choose the seed beads and larger focal beads for the strap. Decide the ideał length and arrange the focal beads and seed beads into a symmetrical design (see photograph, page 8). Be surę to leave at least 20 inches of thread at each end of the strap. String on one or morę focal beads. Pick up and thread enough seed beads to span the distance to the next focal bead. Continue in this fashion until all the beads of the first strand are strung.
With a second thread pass through the first focal bead(s). String enough seed beads to span the distance to the next focal bead. Take the needle through that focal bead, string morę seed beads and so on, until you reach the last focal bead.
Using a surgeon's knot, tie both strands together against the first focal bead. Hołd on to the other ends and hang the two strands down. Shift the beads until there are no spaces between any of the beads in the strands. Tie a second surgeon's knot snugły against the last focal bead at the other end.
Zig-zag all four tails through the woven beads of the purse. Since the strap will carry all the weight of the purse, tie several half-hitches with each taił.
