The word for “not”—nao—comes before the verb:

Nao vejo.    I don’t see.

O senhor n5o ve.    You don’t see.

Such negative words as the forms for “nothing,” “never,” “nobody,” etc. may come after the verb, in which case nao is used before the verb, or they


may precede the verb

£le nao diz nada.

£les nao trabalham -nunca.

Nao vem nińgućm.

Or—

Łle nada diz.

£les nunca trabalham. Ningr ćm vem.

and then nao is not used:

He doesn’t say anything. They never work.

Nobody is coming.
