differentiating cells. The stem cellsare organized into three layers due to (norma! to the meristem surface) celi divisions the outer two layers. Signaling from
the OC (blue arrow) confersa stem celi State upon the apical cells. which in turn restrict the size of the OC via CLV3 signaling (red T-bars). In the root meristem (right). signaling from the quiescent center (blue) inhibits differentiation of the surrounding stem cells (red).
