Design/Completion 1991/1994 New York, New York. USA Battery Park City Authority Span: 299 feet
Steel structure with bowstring truss Glass cladding system
The pedestrian bridge provides a safe, grade-separated Crossing for students and area residents over the busy West Street/ Route 9A corridor, connecting the new Stuwesant High School to the public open spaces of Battery Park City.
Bowstring trusses on either side of the glass and wire mesh walkway are offset from each other in response to the surrounding Street grid. At the center of the span, the painted white trusses form an arch, enclosing the horizontal glass and metal walkway that is suspended within the structure.
The elevator towers mark the east and west ends of the bridge, and are ornamented by stainless Steel details at the tower tops and entry canopies. The eastern stair, constructed of cast-in-place concrete, curves around the elevator shaft in the tradition of a grand staircase. The stairs at the western terminus of the bridge provide egrcss for pedestrians not entering the school.
