Dress Accessońes

1091 SWA81 2101 (2107) 12 fig 127 Highly stylised motif; tin (MLC); 21xl6mm; pair of opposed trefoils with recurving, bifurcated stems, which rejoin at the edges to frame them; each branch of the stems has a lateral shoot; central vein on each leaflet; two rivets.

Woman’s head

1092 SWA81 1668 (2112) 12 fig 127

Tin (MLC); 13x20mm; facing female bust; the right-angled headdress (which completely obscures the hair) has a row of raised bosses, each with a surrounding ring; the gown has an angled, cross-hatched collar, below which is a raised boss in a circle in the centre, perhaps intended for a button.

A similar mount from London in a private collection retains a lead/tin rove.

The headdress is characteristic of the late 14th century. Mounts in the form of both female and małe heads are known of stamped copper-alloy sheeting (MoL acc. nos. 80.13, 81.200/1, 81.266/2, & 85.241/5 - two similar mounts, are all female heads with similar head-dresses, while acc. no. 87.188/1, a bearded man’s head, could be slightly later in datę).

Stars

1093 SWA81 1138 (2144) 9 fig 127 d c.l5mm; sbc-pointed star; lead/tin (MLC); apparently cut from a larger object with a rivet or shank (now missing).
