To cut out a mistake
If a mistake in a ring-and-chain design is too disastrous to be unpicked during work, cut away the ring(s), i.e., the shuttle thread, only. The thread from the bali should then remain intact after the shreds of shuttle thread have been extracted from the tatting.
Replace the shuttle thread, using a weaver's knot (KNOW-HOW 8, p. 32) and conceal the ends while continuing work (KNOW-HOW 7, P- 29).
