PASSENGER TRANSPORT AS A FACTOR IN SPATIAL INTEGRATION ON THE EZOMPLE OF THE BYDGOSZCZ^-TORUN AGGLOMERATION
IN THE MAKING
Ali the previous works on delimitation of urban agglomerations have but to a smali degree taken into consideration the elements of passenger transport system. Starting from the assumption that daily mobility of inhabitants as con-ditioned by this system is* one of the major factors in the workings of an agglomeration, we have undertaken an attempt to make its delimitation morę precise. This attempt consists in determining the area of transport integration, which is a function of the density of connexions, speed and freąuency of in-dividual means of transport. There also exists a possibility of an additional detachment of the area with a raised standard of transport services, e.g., one with increased freąuency of trips, for example, PKP (Polish State Railways) at least every 40 mins., and PKS (Polish Motor Communication) at least every 20 mins.
As a feature of an area with respect to transport integration, one can adopt for smali territorial units the index of a daily number of passenger places per 1000 inhabitants.
The area of transport integration isolated in our studies is slightly distorted in relation to the Bydgoszcz-Toruń agglomeration area delimited by B. Bańkowska (1), but is comprises about 79% of the agglomeration’s population. Further-more, the area isolated in this way forms two separate spatial systems centred around Bydgoszcz and Toruń, including at places agricultural areas that are in the incipient phase of urbanization but are marked for a large proportion of communters, for over 30% people professionally active outside agriculture and for a dynamie inerease in the number of people living on other sources of income than agriculture.
