9. Opening and Closing Sessions

The Opening Session took place on Monday,

July 11, in the "Peacock Room" of the Imperial Hotel. The Session commensed with Koto (Japa-nese harp) musie, and the Conference was declared open by Mr. G. Togashi, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Professor Y. Ochi, Chairman of the Science Council of Japan, and Professor J. Kerisel, President of the International Society, welcomed all the partici-pants to the Conference. Mr. S. Hasegawa, Minister of Construction, gave a congratula-tory address, and was followed by an address from Mr. Y. Onouchi, Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

The Honorary Membership of the Japanese Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineer-ing was presented to five well-known person-alities:    Professor A.W. Skempton, Professor

A. Casagrande, Dr. R.B. Peck, Professor J. Kerisel, and Professor J.K.T.L. Nash.

Unfortunately, Professor Casagrande was not able to be present at the Conference due to illness. Dr. Peck represented the recipients and gave an address in reply.

Finally, Professor M. Fukuoka, President of the Japanese Society, presented a one-hour lecture "State of Geotechnical Engineering in Japan", accompanied with many slides.

In the Closing Session on Friday, July 15, Professor J. Kerisel gave a presidential address, in which he expressed his thanks to the participants and also presented the new President of the International Society, Professor M. Fukuoka. Then three addresses were given by Professor M. Fukuoka as the new President, Mrs. J. Kerisel on behalf of ladies, and Professor S. Hansbo as the representative of the next host Society. The Conference was declared closed by Mr. G. Togashi. After the Closing Session, the participants were enter-tained by the Nikikai Chorus Group who presented a variety of Japanese traditional folk songs; the film "Four Seasons of Japan" was also presented.

10. Technical Films

During the Conference from Monday through Friday, 47 films were shown in the "Kotobuki Room" of the Imperial Hotel. These films were grouped into two themes, one for technical in-terest, and the other for generał introduction of the host country. These films proved to be of much interests to the audiences.

11. Technical V i s i t s

Thirteen different courses had been prepared for technical visits during the Conference. These courses included construction sites of geotechnical interest and geotechnical engi-de publi-cation sćpar§e des compte-rendus, a leurs propres frais, furent indiąuśs pour 7 des 12 Sessions Spdciales. Douze Sessions Spdciales ont eu lieu les apres-midi du lundi au jeudi, trois sessions se tenant chaque jour simultanćment de 15 h 3 17h30, dans les parties Est et Ouest de la salle "Peacock" et dans la salle "Fuji". Cha-que session a śtś suivie par environ 300 3 800 personnes. Bień que les Sessions Spściales aient §tś conęues pour offrir un climat informel permettant l'€change de vues et d'ex-perience entre les participants au Congrds, le nombre d'auditeurs a paru trop grand pour atteindre ce but.

9. Sćances d'0uverture et de Cldture

La Sśance d'Ouverture a eu lieu le lundi 11 juillet, dans la salle "Peacock" de 1'hótel Impśrial. La seance a commence par un concert de Koto (harpe japonaise) puis le Congrds a śt£ dśclarś ouvert par M.G. Togashi, President du Comitś d'Organisation. Le Professeur Ochi, Prśsident du Conseil Scientifique du Japon, et le Professeur J. Kerisel, President de la Soci§t§ Internationale, ont souhait# la bien-venue a tous les participants au Congr^s. Ensuite, M. Hasegawa, Ministre de la Construction, a adresse un message de felicitation, auquel a succśdś un discours de M. Y. Onouchi, Vice-Prśsident du Comite d'Organisation.

La distinction de Membre Honoraire de la Soci-śte Japonaise de Mecanique des Sols et des Travaux de Fondations a ensuite śte remise 3 cinq personnalitśs bien connues: le Professeur A.W. Skempton, le Professeur Arthur Casagrande, le Docteur R.B. Peck, le Professeur J. Kśrisel et le Professeur J.K.T.L.

Nash. Pour des raisons de santś, le Professeur Casagrande n'a malheureusement pas pu assister & ce Congr£s. Le Docteur Peck a adresse un message de remerciement.

Enfin, le Professeur M. Fukuoka, President de la Sociśte Japonaise, a fait le point sur la Geotechnique au Japon, dans une conference d'une heure illustrśe de nombreuses diaposi-tives.

Au cours de la S§ance de CISture, le vendredi 15 juillet, le Professeur J. K§risel a, dans son discours de Prdsident sortant, exprim£ ses remerciements aux participants et śgale-ment prśsente le nouveau Pr§sident de la Societś Internationale, le Professeur M. Fukuoka. Trois discours ont suivi, celui du nouveau President, le Professeur M. Fukuoka, celui de Madame J. KĆrisel, au nom des personnes accompagnantes, et celui du Professeur S. Hansbo, en tant que reprśsentant de la Socidtś invitante pour le prochain Congrds.

Le Congrds a §t§ declarś cios par M. G. Togashi. La Sśance de ClÓture fut suivie de chansons Japonaises chantśes par le groupe chorał de Nikikai et de la projection d'un film intitulś "Quatre saisons au Japon".
