1.5 Mikrobiom jamy ustnej
Jama ustna kolonizowana jest przez rożne drobnoustroje Gram dodatnie i Gram ujemne. Warunki ekologiczne w jamie ustnej nigdy nie są trwałe przez dłuższy okres. Ekosystem jamy ustnej podlega znacznym wahaniom podczas wymiany uzębienia mlecznego na uzębienie stałe. Dodatkowo na ekologię jamy ustnej wpływają ekstrakcje zębów, uzupełnienia protetyczne i aparaty ortodontyczne oraz wszystkie zabiegi stomatologiczne, łącznie z usuwaniem kamienia nazębnego i osadu oraz zakładaniem wypełnień. Przejściowe zmiany stabilności ekosystemu jamy ustnej mogą być wywoływane częstotliwością spożywania i rodzajem przyjmowanego pokarmu, zmiennością przepływu śliny czy długotrwałym stosowaniem antybiotyków.[Marsh i Martin 1994]
Na zębach występują głównie bakterie Gram dodatnie, aerotolerancyjne beztlenowce takie jak Streptococcus sangius i Streptococcus mutans. W kieszonce przyzębnej mogą
