Some people like to hear compliments. Listening to nice things about themselves makes them feel better and heightens their self-appreciation. But I am always suspicious when somebody compliments me too much. Kind words cost nothing and may well be worth nothing. For me the most important thing is what a person does, not what he says.
A year ago we were on a class trip Germany. We slept in youth hostels and we went sightseeing every day. One day, in the morning, I felt terribly ill and weak; I could not even get out of bed. All the people from my class gathered around me and were very kind and compassionate. I told them that they should not worry about me, because I would be all right, such things had happened a few times before and I knew I need only a few hours' rest. They told me they did not want to disturb me and went to see the city. But Ania stayed. She never was a friend of mine, so I was very surprised. “Why are you not going with them?”, I asked.
“Oh, I don't know”, she said. “I thought I'd stay with you, just in case”. “But don't you want to do some sightseeing?” “Not particularly”. In the afternoon I felt better, so I could get up and go out. I thanked Ania. “Not at all”, she replied. We did not become “best friends” after that day. In fact, we rarely talk to each other, because we have different interests. But I will never forget that she was there for me when I could need help. Sometimes even the smallest things we do mean more than things we say, and that's why I always say that actions speak louder than words.
