Track 32: Listening Test for Review D
The Nenet are a group of people who live in the arctic in Siberia, in the north of Russia. They are nomads - which means they do not have a home in one place, but move from place to place. They own enormous herds of reindeer. At the end of the summer they have to move their animals from the north to the south. So every year the Nenets make an incredible journey of over a thousand kilometres.
Life in the arctic can be very difficult. The temperature can be as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius and the days are short. On their journey the Nenet families, including children and old people, have to cross the snow and ice. The Nenets live in big tents called `chums', which they take with them on their journey. There is usually one `chum' for each family and it's the women's job to put it up and take it down. The men look after the animals. Inside a chum it's very warm, with a fire for cooking. Nenet people drink tea, and they eat meat and fish.
Most Nenet people speak Russian, but they also have their own language. Nenet children have to go to school in the towns, but they spend their holidays with their families. Life is very hard for the Nenet people, but although many of them have houses in the towns, they choose to live in the traditional way.
