FLUORIDE

Scientists have known that fluoride could make people's teeth stronger since the late 19th century. However, it wasn't until over 50 years later, in 1951, that fluoride was first added to drinking water. That was in the USA. ¹ ________ . Before that, the country's teeth were the worst in the world. ² ________ Despite the improvements that fluoride brought, some people were still worried. They didn't want fluoride in their water. ³ ________ It took a long time
for them to accept that they wouldn't become ill. In their opinion, fluoride was a poison.
⁴ ________ If it is used in large quantities, it can be dangerous. In 1992, for example, an accident in Alaska caused too much fluoride to be poured into the water. Very soon, 262 people had become ill and one had died. Generally, though, fluoride is safe and useful. So why doesn't all water contain fluoride? ⁵ ______. $0.95 per person per year doesn't sound much but that's $300 million a year in the USA.
