Der Barhocker S 123 H: ein eleganter Allrounder.

Der

Entwurf stammt von James Irvine, der – wie bei all sei-

nen Entwürfen für Thonet – die Tradition unseres

Unternehmens sehr sensibel mit der heutigen Zeit ver-

bindet. In diesem Fall ist Metall das dominierende

Material. Der elegant geschwungene Bügel unter dem

Sitz, der als Fußstütze dient, besteht aus gebogenem

Stahlrohr und schafft dadurch die Verbindung zu den

Entwürfen der Bauhaus-Zeit. Die Sitze, entweder rund

oder oval, gibt es aus Holz in verschiedenen Beiztönen

oder gepolstert mit Leder- oder Stoffbezügen. Das

Gestell ruht auf einer stabilen runden Bodenplatte. Mit

Hilfe einer Gasdruckfeder lässt sich die Sitzhöhe be-

quem stufenlos regulieren, wobei die Fußstütze immer

im optimalen Abstand für den Benutzer mit verstellt

wird. All diese Überlegungen sind Basis für ein multi-

funktionales Produkt, das sowohl im Objekt

und im privaten Umfeld eingesetzt wer-

den kann.

The barstool S 123 H – an elegant all-round piece.

This design is by James Irvine, who - as with all of his

designs for Thonet - sensibly connects our company's

tradition with our current era. In this case, metal is

the dominant material. The curved footrest beneath

the seat, which serves as an element supporting the

user's legs, consists of bent tubular steel and estab -

lishes a connection with the Bauhaus designs. The

seats, either round or oval, are available in wood in

various stains or upholstered with leather or textile

covers. The frame rests on a stable round base. The

sitting height can be variably adjusted by the gas

shock, whereas the foot support element is fixed at an

ideal height for the user. All of these considerations

are the basis for a multi-functional product that can

be used in semi-public as well as private environ-

ments.

Eine moderne Interpretation des Bugholzerbes und

die Verwendung von Formholz

in Verbindung mit einer

neuartig-konstruktiven Bauweise – diese Idee ist die

Basis für das Holzstuhl-Programm 404 von Stefan Diez.

Er bezieht sich mit seinem Entwurf auf das Erbe von

Thonet, transformiert es jedoch unter ästhetischen und

technologischen Kriterien in die heutige Zeit. Die Stuhl-

beine und Armlehnen laufen in einem „Knoten“ unter

dem Sitz zusammen. Neue Technologien ermöglichen

die Verstärkung der Sitzfläche in der Mitte und die Re-

duktion und Verformung zu den Rändern hin. Dadurch

wird die Sitzfläche zu einem konstruktiven und mar-

kant geformten Element.

Hoher Sitzkomfort, eine ausgeprägte Linienführung

und raffinierte Details kennzeichnen das Programm. Es

wirkt leicht, sowohl materiell als auch konstruktiv –

darin erinnert es an die historischen Bugholzmodelle.

Der Sitz scheint wie eine dünne Fläche eingepasst. Mit

seinen leicht ausgestellten Beinen vermitteln die Stüh-

le Komfort und bieten ihn auch. Dazu trägt die elegan-

te, ausgeformte Rückenlehne bei: beim Zurücklehnen

federt sie angenehm nach. – Es gibt zwei unterschied-

liche Varianten, den Stuhl 404 und den größer dimen-

sionierten Armlehnenstuhl 404 F.

A modern interpretation of the bentwood heritage

with the use of molded plywood

in connection with

an innovative constructive design – this idea is the

basis for the wood chair program 404 by Stefan Diez.

With his design, he refers to the heritage of Thonet,

but transforms it into our time under aesthetic and

technological criteria. The chair legs and armrests

merge beneath the seat in a "knot." New technologies

enable the enforcement of the seat in the center and

the reduction and deformation towards the edges.

The seat thus becomes a constructive and strikingly

shaped element.

High sitting comfort, expressive lines and sophistica-

ted details characterize the program. It has a light-

weight appearance in its materials as well as con-

struction. In this respect, it is reminiscent of the

historic bentwood models. The seat seems to be inser-

ted like a thin surface. With its slightly curved legs, the

chairs communicate comfort, and they also offer it. The

elegantly shaped backrest makes its contribution to

this effect: it comfortably tilts when leaning back. Two

different versions are available; chair 404 and the lar-

ger dimensioned armchair 404 F.

Die neuen Tische 1404.

Formal zeigt sich die Verbin-

dung zu den Stühlen in der typischen Rundung der Bei-

ne, die Kanten der Platte sind schmal, deshalb wirken

auch die Tische leicht und elegant. Für die Stabilität

sorgt eine spezielle Konstruktion unter der Platte. Zum

Transportieren und Lagern lassen sich die Tischbeine

von der Platte lösen. Die Tische werden in unterschied-

lichen Größen gefertigt.

„Ich habe nach einer neuen Idee für die Verbindung von

Sitz und Gestell gesucht, weil in meinen Augen Thonet

nicht für das Thema „Schrauben und Dübeln“ steht.

Und so kommt die Knoten-Verbindung ohne jede Zarge

oder Verschraubung aus.“

„Für mich ist das Thema Dreidimensionalität beson-

ders eng mit der Geschichte von Thonet verbunden:

diese verrückte Idee, Holz so zu biegen, als ob es ein

zweites Mal wächst.“

The connection with the chairs

is formally visible in the typical curve of the legs;

the tabletop edges are narrow, which provides the

tables with a lightweight and elegant look. A special

construction beneath the tabletop assures stability.

The legs can be removed from the tabletop for trans-

port and storage. The tables are produced in different

sizes.

Der Stuhl der Stühle feiert

sein 150jähriges Jubilä-

um.

In den 1850er Jahren

perfektionierte der Pionier-

geist Michael Thonet seine

Technik der Möbel aus gebogenem Holz und entwickel-

te einen neuen Möbel-Typus, der zum ersten Mal indu-

striell in Serie gefertigt wurde. Mit dem Stuhl Nr. 14,

heute 214, gelang ihm ein Wurf, mit dem die Geschich-

te des modernen Möbels beginnt. 1859 wurde er auf

den Markt gebracht. Es war nicht allein die Ästhetik

und Qualität des Stuhls, mit entscheidend war das

Baukasten-Prinzip und das geniale Vertriebskonzept:

36 Stühle packte man zerlegt in eine Kiste mit 1 qm

Volumen. Sie wurden in die ganze Welt verschickt und

vor Ort zusammengebaut – in Europa, Nord- und Süd-

Amerika, Asien und Afrika. Deshalb gilt Thonet als Pio-

nier des Industrie-Designs schlechthin.

its 150th anniversary.

During the

1850s, the pioneering mind Michael

Thonet perfected his technique of

bentwood furniture and developed

a new type of furniture, which was industrially produ-

ced in series for the first time ever. The chair No. 14 –

today 214 – was an enormous success and epitomizes

the beginning of the history of modern furniture. It

was introduced to the market in 1859. Not only were

the aesthetics and quality of the chair decisive, but

also the modular design and unique distribution con-

cept: 36 disassembled chairs were packed into a box

with volume of 1 cubic meter. They were shipped to all

corners of the world – Europe, North and South Ame-

rica, Asia, and Africa – and assembled on site. There-

fore, Thonet is considered the pioneer of industrial

design.

Mit der Initiative von Michael Thonet passierte noch

vieles mehr: Wohnungen, Cafés und Restaurants sahen

plötzlich anders aus. Thonet revolutionierte die Ein-

richtungswelt dieser Zeit, denn diese Stühle waren für

jeden erschwinglich. Und ihre Qualität war und ist

auch heute so gut, dass sie Generationen überlebten.

Selbst heute noch sind Stühle aus dem 19. Jahrhundert

im täglichen Gebrauch. Man erzählt vom Härtetest in

Paris vor der Möblierung des Restaurants im Eiffel-

turm: den Sturz von der ersten Plattform aus 57 Metern

Höhe hat er ohne Schaden überstanden.

Der Stuhl Nr. 14 hat viele Architekten und Designer

inspiriert. Aber das Original ist bisher unerreicht. Der

Architekt Le Corbusier bestätigte „... dass dieser Stuhl,

der in Millionen von Exemplaren auf dem europäischen

Festland und in beiden Amerika in Gebrauch ist, Adel

besitzt.“

Wir feiern dieses Jubiläum mit vielfältigen

Aktivitäten.

Michael Thonet's initiative led to many other events:

homes, cafés and restaurants suddenly had a different

look. Thonet revolutionized the interior design world of

the time because everybody could afford these chairs.

And their quality today is as good as it was and they

survived generations. Even today, chairs produced in

the 19th century are still being used on a daily basis.

The story of the robustness test in Paris before the

Eiffel Tower restaurant was furnished is still being told:

the chair survived a fall from the first platform of the

tower, from a height of 57 meters, and was undamaged.

The chair No. 14 inspired many architects and desi-

gners. But the original has remained unparalleled.

The architect Le Corbusier confirmed "… this chair,

millions of which are used on the European continent

and both North and South America, possesses nobility."

We are celebrating this anniversary with numerous

activities.

Im Jahr 1819 gründet Michael Thonet in seiner

Heimatstadt Boppard am Rhein eine Bau- und Möbel-

tischlerei.

Sie ist der Ursprung unseres heutigen

Unternehmens. In den 1830er Jahren experimentiert er

mit in Leim gekochten Furnierstreifen, nach mehreren

Jahren gelingt ihm dann die Erfindung der „Möbel aus

massiv gebogenem Holz“.

Fürst Metternich, Staatskanzler der K.u.K. Monarchie,

findet Gefallen an seinen Möbeln und holt ihn 1842

nach Wien. Dort eröffnet er zusammen mit seinen Söh-

nen 1849 ein neues Unternehmen. Innovative Ferti-

gungs- und Vertriebsmethoden sowie ein umfangrei-

ches Sortiment von Stühlen, Tischen, Sesseln, Liegen,

Garderoben usw. führen zum rasanten Aufschwung des

Unternehmens und zu weltweiter Anerkennung. Um

1900 wird in sieben Fabriken im heutigen Tschechien,

Ungarn, Russland und in Frankenberg (Deutschland)

produziert. Es gibt eigene Niederlassungen in allen

wichtigen Metropolen der Welt.

In 1819 Michael Thonet establishes a construction

and furniture joinery in his hometown of Boppard on

the River Rhine.

It is our company’s place of origin.

During the 1830s he experiments with veneer strips

boiled in glue, and after several years he invents the

"furniture made of solid bentwood."

Prince Metternich, State Chancellor of the K.u.K. mon-

archy, likes Thonet's furniture and calls him to Vienna

in 1842. Together with his sons, he opens a new com-

pany there in 1849. Innovative production and distri-

bution methods as well as a comprehensive range of

chairs, tables, armchairs, couches, wardrobes, etc.,

produce rapid growth and global recognition to the

company. By around 1900 the furniture is being produ-

ced in seven sites in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Rus-

sia, and in Frankenberg (Germany). Branch offices can

be found in all of the world's important capitals.

1889 beginnt das Werk in Frankenberg (D) mit der

Produktion.

Dieser Standort hat strategische Bedeu-

tung: die waldreiche Region, die zentrale Lage und die

direkte Bahn-Anbindung. Zunächst werden auch hier

Bugholz-Modelle gefertigt. 1930 beginnt die Produk-

tion der Stahlrohrmöbel. Der II. Weltkrieg bringt eine

harte Zäsur: die Fabriken in den osteuropäischen Län-

dern werden enteignet, die in Frankenberg durch einen

Luftangriff zerstört. Nach dem Krieg beginnt die Auf-

bauphase, neue Modelle werden entwickelt, der Ver-

trieb international expandiert.

Frankenberg ist heute Hauptsitz von Thonet. Das Unter-

nehmen ist nach wie vor in Familienbesitz.

Anlässlich der Jubiläen finden zahlreiche Aktivitäten

statt.

In 1889 the Frankenberg (D) facility becomes opera-

tional.

This site is of strategic importance: the wooded

region, the central location, and the direct railroad

connection. First, bentwood models are produced here,

as well. In 1930, the production of tubular steel furni-

ture begins. World War II caused a harsh halt in pro-

duction: the facilities in the Eastern European coun-

tries are disappropriated, and the Frankenberg facility

is destroyed by an air attack. After the war the recon-

struction phase begins; new models are developed,

and the distribution is internationally expanded.

Today, Thonet has its head offices in Frankenberg; the

company is still owned by the family.

Numerous activities will take place at the occasion

of these two anniversaries.

gegründet.

Nach Art und Konzeption

war es damals etwas völlig Neues. Es bestand von

1919 bis 1933 und gilt heute weltweit als Ursprung der

Avantgarde der Klassischen Moderne auf allen Gebie-

ten der freien und angewandten Kunst. Der Einfluss

dieser Institution war so bedeutend, dass der Begriff

„Bauhaus“ oft mit der Moderne in Architektur und

Design gleichgesetzt wird. Die Arbeiten von Lehrern

und Schülern am Bauhaus werden als Teil von

länderübergreifenden Strömungen gesehen

und unter Begriffen wie Funktionalismus,

Klassische Moderne und Neue Sachlichkeit

eingeordnet.

Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in

1919 as an art school in Weimar.

The

concept behind the school was some-

thing entirely new at the time. It existed from 1919

until 1933 and is today considered the birthplace of the

avantgarde movement and classic modernism in all

areas of free and applied art worldwide. The influence

of this institution was so enormous that the term "Bau-

haus" is often synonymous with modernism in archi-

tecture and design. The works by teachers and students

at the Bauhaus are viewed as

a part of international move-

ments and categorized in terms

such as functionalism, classic

modernism, and new objectivity.

Die Geschichte der Thonet-Stahlrohrmöbel ist eng mit

dem Bauhaus verbunden.

In den 1920er Jahren experi-

mentierte man dort mit einem neuen Material: geboge-

nem Stahlrohr. 1925 entwarf Marcel Breuer eine Reihe

von Beistellmöbeln. Dann setzte Mart Stam mit seiner

Idee des Freischwingers, einen Meilenstein in der Möbel-

geschichte. Es entstanden zahlreiche Entwürfe, die in

ihrer Schlichtheit und Reduktion das Symbol für die

Neue Sachlichkeit wurden. Der Thonet-Steckkarten-Ka-

talog von 1930/31 enthielt Entwürfe u.a. von Marcel

Breuer, Le Corbusier, Hans Luckhardt, Ludwig Mies van

der Rohe, Mart Stam sowie zahlreiche von Thonet ent-

wickelte Modelle. Eine Vielzahl davon sind seit dieser

Zeit fester Bestandteil unseres Programms, sie alle zäh-

len zu den Klassikern der Möbelgeschichte.

The history of Thonet tubular steel furniture is close-

ly connected with the Bauhaus.

During the 1920s expe-

riments with a new material – bent tubular steel – were

being made there. In 1925, Marcel Breuer designed a

number of side tables. Then, Mart Stam set a milestone

in furniture history with his idea of the cantilever chair.

Numerous designs were created; with their simplicity

and reduction they became symbols of the new objecti-

vity. The Thonet card catalog from 1930/31 included

designs by Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Hans Luckhardt,

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Mart Stam, as well as

numerous models developed by Thonet. Since that time,

many of them have been fixed institutions of our pro-

gram, and they are all classics of furniture history.

Classics – furniture without depreciation.

Only the

best deserve to be called classics. Classics are pro-

ducts that were designed decades ago but have main-

tained their validity and topicality. They have survived

all of the fashion trends and have held their own

against an enormously large number of other products.

Those who decide in favour of classics have security on

their side. The purchase of a classic also means an

investment in the future. The aesthetic and material

quality of classics is outstanding. They develop a high-

quality patina over the course of intensive use, and

they are often handed down to following generations or

perhaps end up in galleries or at auctions after increa-

sing in value.

Our program includes a whole host of classics – mile-

stones in modern furniture history. The oldest among

them, the bentwood chair 214, which will celebrate its

150th anniversary in 2009, marks the beginning of the

industrial production of furniture.

fertigen wir im

Herbst 2008 zum letzten Mal in der limitierten Auflage

von 25 Exemplaren. Ihr Entwurf geht zurück auf das

Jahr 1883, damals war sie als praktisches und attrak-

tives Möbel in zahlreichen Wohnungen, Cafés und

Restaurants zu finden. Das Thonet-Programm enthielt

um die Jahrhundertwende ein breites Sortiment an

Bugholz-Modellen – Stühle, Sessel, Sofas, Tische, Bet-

ten, Paravents, Sportgeräte, Kindermöbel und auch

Garderoben.

Diese Final Edition macht jedes Stück zum wertvollen

Unikat: ein Sonder-Etikett ist an jeder Garderobe ange-

bracht, dazu gibt es ein handsigniertes Echtheits-Zer-

tifikat.

Ausführung: Buche gebeizt nach Thonet-Standardbeiz-

tönen, Höhe 190 cm, Durchmesser 66 cm.

We will produce the legendary bentwood wardrobe

for the last time in the fall of 2008 in a limited edition

of 25 copies. Its design goes back to 1883, when it

could be found in numerous homes, cafés, and restau-

rants as a practical and attractive piece of furniture.

The Thonet program included a wide range of bentwood

models at the turn of the century, including chairs,

armchairs, sofas, tables, beds, room dividers, sports

equipment, children's furniture, and also wardrobes.

This final edition makes each piece a valuable unique

specimen: a special label is attached on each wardro-

thenticity.

Die Liege „Still-Leben“

wird 20 Jahre nach ihrer Ent-

stehung neu aufgelegt. Das individuelle Möbel, das in

erster Linie für den Einsatz im Wohnbereich gedacht

ist, wird ab 2009 in limitierter Auflage von 100 Exem-

plaren gefertigt. Sein zeitloses, individuelles Design

besticht durch die Kombination aus schlichtem Sitze-

lement und großzügig geschwungenem Untergestell.

Der Beiname „Still-Leben“ steht für die Doppelfunk-

tion von Liege und Schaukelliege, dafür nimmt man die

Liegefläche vom Untergestell und dreht sie um 180°.

Entspannung und Beweglichkeit verbinden sich mit

einer reduzierten und dynamischen Linienführung und

machen sie zum funktionalen und repräsentativen

Wohnobjekt.

Für diese limitierte Auflage gibt es ein Sonderetikett

am Produkt und ein handsigniertes Echtheits-Zertifikat.

Ausführung: Gestell Stahlrohr verchromt, Bezug aus

Gurtgeflecht. Maße: 62 x 158 x 93 cm (Liege) und 62 x

180 x 93 cm (Schaukelliege).

The "Still-Life" couch

is being re-issued 20 years after

its creation. This unique piece of furniture, which was

mainly conceived for use in living environments, will be

produced in a limited edition of 100 copies starting in

2009. Its timeless and individual design impresses

with the combination of simple sitting element and

generously curved frame. The nickname "Still-Life"

stands for the dual function of couch and rocking

couch; for this purpose, the couch is taken off the

frame and turned 180 degrees. Relaxation and flexi-

bility are combined with reduced and dynamic lines

and make it a functional and representative interior

design object.

A special label on the product and a hand-signed certi-

ficate of originality identify this special limited edition.

Materials: chrome plated tubular steel frame, cover

made of belt meshwork. Dimensions: 62 x 158 x 93 cm

(couch) and 62 x 180 x 93 cm (rocking couch).

Programm A 1700 bietet eine Vielzahl von Lösungen

für diesen Bereich.

Umfangreiche Gestell- und nahe-

zu unbegrenzte Tischplatten-Varianten sowie ein inno-

vatives Multimedia-Modul machen das System zu

einem hochgradig variablen Programm. Es eignet sich

für die Einrichtung permanent installierter Tischanla-

gen ebenso wie zur Ausstattung von variabel genutz-

ten Räumen. Selbst große Tischanlagen können von

einer Person mühelos montiert und demontiert werden.

Mit ihrer speziellen Konstruktion und Verbindungs-

technik lassen sich die Tischbeine ohne Werkzeuge mit

den Tischplatten verbinden. Sie nehmen auch die

Kabelstränge auf.

Sonderlösungen, zugeschnitten auf den Raum und die

Anzahl der Sitzplätze, sind unsere Spezialität. Möglich

sind unterschiedliche Formen von Tischplatten, abwei-

chende Maße und auch verschiedene Materialien.

Kommunikation mit modernster Technologie ist ein

wichtiger Teil des Programms. Sehr dezent ist die Tech-

nik in das Möbel integriert. Die Elektrifizierung und

Medientechnik wird ab Bodentank übernommen. Mit dem

Thonet Multimedia Modul lassen sich bis zu 160 Teil-

nehmer mit Strom, Netzwerk, USB und Audio vernetzen.

A 1700 offers a broad range of solutions for this sec-

tor.

Comprehensive frame and almost unlimited table-

top versions as well as an innovative multimedia

module make the system a highly flexible program. It

is suitable for furnishing permanently installed table

systems as well as spaces with variable uses. Even large

table systems can be effortlessly assembled and dis-

assembled by one person. With their special construc-

tion and connection technology, the table legs can be

fixed to the tabletops without tools. They also house the

cable harnesses.

Special solutions, custom-tailored to the space and the

number of seats, are our specialty. Various tabletop

shapes, special dimensions and different materials

are possible.

Communicating with cutting-edge technology is an

important part of the program. The technology is very

discretely integrated into the furniture. Electrification

and media technology is taken from the floor socket.

With the Thonet Multimedia Module, up to 160 partici-

pants can be networked with power, network techno-

logy, USB and audio.

Man findet die Stühle in Messe-

hallen, Veranstaltungs- und Konzertsälen, in Museen,

Kirchen, Rathäusern und auch in Kantinen.

Dieses Multitalent ist stapelbar, einfach verkettbar

und leicht zu pflegen. Es bietet hohen Sitzkomfort und

ist in seiner Gestaltung so klar und zurückhaltend,

dass es harmonisch in unterschiedliche Umgebungen

passt.

Das Besondere ist die intelligente und sichere Reihen-

verbindung, sie ist für Thonet patentiert: Bei den Stüh-

len mit Armlehnen werden dafür die Gestelle ohne

Zusatzteile einfach ineinander verschränkt. Dieses

innovative System bietet zwei wesentliche ökonomi-

sche Vorteile. Die komfortable Stuhlbreite von 58 cm

hat ein Reihen-Achsmaß von nur 53 cm, damit lassen

sich mehr Stühle auf einer definierten Fläche unter-

bringen. Und das Handling ist so einfach, dass sich die

Auf- und Abbau-Zeiten deutlich reduzieren.

Es gibt zahlreiche Varianten dieses Modells; auch

Zusatzelemente wie Kollegplatte, Reihen- und Platz-

nummerierung, Stapelwagen für den Transport usw.

Im Februar 2009 wird das Programm erweitert.

by the thousands and successfully tested under the

toughest conditions.

You can find these chairs in tra-

de fair halls, event and concert halls, museums, chur-

ches and town halls, as well as cafeterias.

This versatile chair is stackable, easy to connect into

rows and easy to care for. It offers a high level of sit-

ting comfort and is so clear and discrete in its design

that it harmonically fits into a wide range of environ-

ments.

The special feature is the intelligent and secure row

connection, which has been patented for Thonet: the

frames of the chairs with armrests are simply linked up

without any additional parts. This innovative system

offers two essential economic advantages: the comfort-

able chair width of 58 cm has a row axis dimension of

only 53 cm; more chairs can thus fit in a defined space.

And the handling is so easy that the assembly and dis-

assembly times are clearly reduced.

This model comes in numerous versions; extra ele-

ments such as a writing tablets, row and seat number-

ing, stacking cart for transport, etc. are available.

The program will be expanded in February 2009.

Gezeigt werden Sequenzen aus unserer Produktion, wo

wir mit den neuesten Technologien, aber auch mit

einem hohen Grad an handwerklicher Fertigung arbei-

ten. Man sieht die Sorgfalt und Qualität, die den

gesamten Herstellungsprozess begleitet. Eine Zeitrei-

se anhand der Produkte, von 1859 bis heute, gibt Ein-

blick in die fast 190jährige Geschichte unseres Unter-

nehmens. Und man sieht, wie heute Thonet-Möbel im

Einsatz sind – im Objekt und im privaten Umfeld.

This new film offers a current portrait of Thonet.

It presents sequences from our production facility,

where we work with cutting-edge technologies but also

with a high degree of craftsmanship. The care and

quality that accompanies the entire production process

can be seen. A journey through time based on the pro-

ducts from 1859 to the present offers an insight into

the almost 190 years of corporate history. The film also

demonstrates how Thonet furniture is used today – in

public and private environments.
