to present days of the week and numbers from one to five
to revise some fruit names

Objectives: by the end of the lesson the students will know the days of the week and will be able to count from one to five
Teaching points:
vocabulary: the days of the week, numbers from one to five, fruit names
grammar: affirmatives and questions in Past Simple
functions: understanding the written story
sounds: sentence stress
Materials: pictures of the fruit, half of the story (simplified), captions for fruit
Anticipated problems + solutions:
students may not focus on the story being read to them -> the teacher has to modulate their voice, make pauses and point to the lines being read

1 Pre-reading |
The teacher shows the pictures of the fruit mentioned in the story and elicits the names from the students. Then the teacher points to the selected pictures and the whole class gives the names. The teacher shows the front page of the book and asks what a caterpillar is. Students answer the question in Polish. |

2 Reading |
Teacher reads the story pointing at the lines being read. It is extremely important that the teacher modulates their voice and makes pauses, so that the students can follow the text, look at the pictures and generally involve in the story. |

3 Post-reading |
The students are asked comprehensive questions about the names of the fruit eaten on a particular day of the week. They answer questions individually. Later they are asked to say and show on their fingers how many fruits the caterpillar ate on a particular day of the week. This task they perform together. Then pictures of the fruit are stick to the board and students are asked to match them with the captions. |
