Art lover Dean Crossman tells his story.
I have always been a fan of contemporary art and I started collecting it when I was a teenager. I knew all the new artists in London and could recognise their styles. That's how I recognised the painting by Cupole in an East London corner shop. If I hadn't been interested in art, I might not have noticed it, but Cupole was one of my favourite artists.
I asked the shopkeeper if he liked the painting and he said he thought it was all right but not fantastic. I also asked him how he had got it. He said that a few months before an artist who couldn't afford his shopping had offered him the painting as payment. If he hadn't felt sorry for the artist, he would have said no. However, the artist seemed genuine and poor, so the shopkeeper accepted the painting.
At the time, I was working in a bookshop. I wasn't earning much money but I knew I wanted the painting. I asked the shopkeeper if he would sell it. He said if he hadn't had a business to run, he would have given it to me for free, but he needed the money and would sell the painting for £200. I didn't have enough money so I went home and asked my mother for a loan. She agreed. The next day I returned to the shop and bought the painting. The shopkeeper seemed pleased.
I kept the painting in my flat. All my friends thought it was an ugly piece of junk. If I had listened to them, I would have thrown it away. But luckily I loved the painting, so I kept it. Cupole became famous a few years later and the painting became very valuable. Last year I decided to sell it because I wanted to buy a new motorbike. I sold it for £45,000! My mum was very happy because she got a share of the profits, too.
