RELIGION

ESTABLISHED CHURCHES (official, recognised):

  1. Church of England (Anglican) - London Parliament, bishops, archbishops of House of Lords. Changes in this church should go through Parliament.

  2. Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) - no hierarchy.

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

  1. Westminster Abbey - main church for ceremonies

  2. St. Paul's Cathedral (know only century)

  3. 1534 - monasteries dissolved, properties confiscated and English language introduced

  4. 1549 - Protestant form of worship - Book of Common Prayer, but then NOT introduced (Edward VI)

  5. Elisabeth I doctrinal changes: 1558 - Act of Parliament - established Church of England. English language and Book of Common Prayer introduced officially.

  6. 1611 - “King James Bible” (James I) = “Authorised version”

CHURCH REFORMS

  1. Hierarchy remained (different from other Protestant churches)

  2. Mixture of Protestant and Catholic elements

  3. 16th century - priests are allowed to get married

  4. 1987 - women are ordained as priests (it was even in 19th century but it was not official)

  5. 2008 - women can be bishops

  6. Many priests left Anglican because they didn't agree for women to be ordained, they were accepted by Catholics, although they were married

LOW AND HIGH CHURCH - it doesn't matter on which level, on all levels of hierarchy we have Low and High Church. It is NOT a structure! Simply a difference how the church and priests look.

  1. High Church - some people accepted in 19th century to have more decorations, richer rituals and ropes

  2. Low Church - traditional, not decorated, simple ropes and simplicity.

STRUCTURE:

  1. The Sovereign (Monarch) - ordains highest clergy

  2. 2 archbishops (Canterbury, York) - they are in House of Lords - provinces

  3. Bishops - dioceses (diecezje)

  4. Vicars (rectors) - parishes

Some churches are a little different:

  1. Deans - in cathedrals. His position is much higher than other priests, but not as high as da bishop.

HOW TO BECOME A PRIEST?

  1. All clergymen are ordained by bishops.

  2. Bishops, archbishops, deans are appointed by the Crown.

  3. Theological colleges - ordained, all clergy take allegiance (lojalność) to the Crown - they take oath to obey what Monarch wants.

FINANCING:

  1. Clergy is paid out of Church's fund

  2. There are shops inside the cathedrals - it's also source of income

  3. Parishioner's contribution

  4. If priests work in school, prison, hospital - they have salary and it is paid by the state

  5. Sunday Schools - it's additional. Sometimes parents want their children to gain additional religious education.

Everybody has the right to religious freedom.

Religious services on TV - ecumenical (for all British churches)

Religious education - required by law, in any type of state school. But it is ecumenical, because of different children attend to classes, it is more about morality etc.
