I've always worked in my corner shop. I started working here for my father when I was sixteen and it's been my life since then. My father retired ten years ago and I took over the shop. I know my customers very well because almost all of them are from the local area. That's why I was surprised when five years ago a strange young man came into the shop and asked about my painting.

I had got the painting a few months before. An artist had offered it to me in exchange for his shopping because he said he didn't have enough money. I wouldn't normally have accepted but he seemed genuine and poor.

I thought the painting was all right but not fantastic, so I put it up in the shop instead of taking it home. It was a few months after that when a young man came into my shop. He was interested in the painting and asked if I wanted to sell it. I would have given it to him for free but I had a business to run so I offered to sell it for £200. I didn't think I would see him again but the next day he came back with the £200 and I sold him the painting.

I still work in the shop but it has changed a lot. I borrowed money from a bank three years ago to expand my shop, so my business is bigger now and things are going pretty well.

A few months ago, however, I read a newspaper article about the young man who bought my painting. The artist had become famous and my painting had been sold for £45,000! From a £200 investment the young man had earned £44,800. If only I had known more about art at the time, I would have kept the painting!
