9. Binding
Used for finishing, including slit openings, head-wear, etc. by enclosing raw edges (single or multi-layered) with a strip of fabric, ribbon or braid.
a. Straight strip of fabric, with raw edges turned in and stitched; here eased round the end of a slit.
b. Ribbon pleated to fit a curved edge.
c. Binding used as a neck finish and fastening on a shirt, with the fabric extended to form ties. Hem the narrow binding over the neck edge and oversew the extensions.
10. Finishes for slit openings
Methods to avoid tearing of slit openings on unlined garments.
a. For linen or lightweight cloth. Hem the sides of the plain slit, taper the hems to nothing at the base and reinforce it with blanket stitch (shown in progress).
b. For almost any materiał. Cut the slit in at the base on each side. Hem the sides and fold the base across to form a pleat. Stab-stitch this in place through all layers.
c. For heavier cloths. Hem down the raw edges and sew a patch at the base with blanket or herringbone stitch (shown in progress).
