Actions of Glucagon
Ficure 8.21 Actions of Glucagon
Glucagon is a łueł-mobilization hormone. It acts on Ihe liver to break down glycogen and stimulates hepatic gluconeogenesis from amino acids. The effect of these actions is to inerease the blood glucose concentration. Glucagon also acts on adipose tissue to stimulate lipolysis and the release o! fatty acids. Metabolism of the fatty acids by the liver produces keto acids. Amino acids are released from mus cle in response to glucagons and are converted to glucose in the liver by gluconeogenesis. The net effcct of glucagon is that glucose. fatt>< acid, and keto acid levels in the blood inerease.
