24 • THE PATTERN COLLECTION
Using Coats Chain Mercer Crochet No. 20, the braid measures 2.5 cm (1 in) in width, and will ease to a curve.
Start at A with a ring of lOds, p, (lds, p) twice, lOds; rw. Continue from the diagram, reversing work between chains D and E, E and F, and so on. Ali joins are madę with the shuttle thread except where chain H joins chain E. When joining to the base of a ring (where there is no picot), insert the hook between the most conveni-ent threads.

To renew a thread by overlapping
This is the ąuickest way to renew a thread, and it can be used to replace a shuttle or bali thread. It is best worked at the beginning of a ring or chain. It gives a slight thickening where the threads are doubled so, in order to compensate for this, fewer stitches need be worked than given in the pattern. Picots should
For a chain, overlap the old and new bali threads sufficiently to wrap the whole overlap on the left hand, around the fourth finger, clutching tightly. Work three or four double stitches, then drop the old thread and continue with the new. For a ring, overlap the old and new shuttle threads sufficiently for both to encircle the hand completely, again clutching tightly, and proceed as given for the chain. Ends can be clipped once the ring is closed, or once the chain is completed.
