21. TROUBLESHOOTING

ENGINE DOES NOT START		POOR PERFORMANCE
OR IS HARD TO START	21-1	AT HIGH SPEED	21-4
ENGINE LACKS POWER	21-2	POOR HANDLING	21-4
POOR PERFORMANCE AT LOW ANDIDLESPEEDS	21-3

^ ENGINE DOES NOT START OR IS HARD TO START

1.    Check if fuel is getting to the carburetor

GETTING TO CARBURETOR

2.    Remove spark pług

NOT GETTING TO CARBURETOR

WET PŁUG

DRY

3.    Try spark test

SPARK

4.    Test cylinder compression

COMPRESSION NORMAL

WEAK OR NO SPARK

LOW COMPRESSION

Probable cause

•    No fuel in fuel tank

•    Clogged fuel tubę or fuel filter or fuel strainer

•    Clogged float valve

•    Clogged fuel tank cap breather tubę

•    Carburetor flooded

•    Carburetor choke excessively closed

•    Throttle va!ve excessively open

•    Clogged air cleaner element

•    GO TO PAGE 17-2

5. Start by following normal starting procedurę

ENGINE FIRES BUT SOON STOPS

ENGINE DOES NOT FIRE

6. Start with choke applied
