TOPIC / THEME: Technique - Heading

DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE:
This practice is designed to develop and progress the player's heading techniques
ORGANISATION:
	Grid size: 15m x 20m with a 3m channel between grids 6 players in each grid Players work in pairs across the grid to start, bedding down the first key factors Progress to groups of three in each grid Middle player acts as server for player to head to player at the opposite end of the grid Server rotates to face other end after each serve Progress to server bouncing ball Advance to player at opposite end playing cushion headers back to server

KEY OBSERVATION FACTORS:

Body shape Relaxed and balanced Mouth closed, eyes open Watch the ball onto forehead Progressions Arch back to follow through Adjust position to contact ball at the most favourable height Accuracy of header

NOTES:

Use soft balls to develop technique and only use a small number of repetitions Two types of headers. Defensive…slightly below the middle of the ball…”visualize an airplane taking off into the sky” Attacking…slightly above the middle of the ball…”visualize the airplane landing on the runway”
