Before 1991, all football cup semi finals in England were played in different cities. In the north of England, matches could be played in Manchester, Liverpool or Sheffield. In the middle of the country there was Aston Villa's ground in Birmingham and, in the south teams used Arsenal's ground in London. The organisers waited until they knew who was playing and then decided on the best ground. As an example, if Liverpool played Manchester United, they could play in Birmingham or Sheffield so the supporters didn't have to travel very far. Then, in 1991, Arsenal played Tottenham in the semi-final. Both teams are from London and they decided to play the match at Wembley, the stadium where the final is played. It was the first time this had happened but other clubs realised they could make more money by playing their semi final matches there too. In 2011, all four clubs in the semi finals were from the north-west of England; Manchester United, Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City. Manchester United could have played Manchester City in Liverpool, a journey of just 50km. Bolton Wanderers could have played Stoke City in Manchester, a 20km journey for Bolton fans and an 80km one for Stoke fans. But, because of money, fans of all four clubs had to make the 300km journey to Wembley. On the same day as one of the semi-finals, Liverpool were also playing in London, although not in the FA Cup, so almost 150,000 people were all travelling in the same direction.
