A: We had a great time sightseeing.

B: What did you see?

A: Oh, lots of things. The best was … I forget the name but it was really great. The view from the top was amazing.

B: What was it? Some kind of tower?

A: Not really. It's this giant woman with her arm in the air. You go inside and climb these stairs just like in a tower or a castle. You know, they go round and round. At the top, you look out through the woman's eyes. I wish I could remember the name of it.

A: It's great that you were able to come here today, Hans.

B: Thank you for inviting me. What are those?

A: They're Christmas crackers. When we've finished eating, we pull them. Inside there's a hat, a joke and a small present. We bought them in the department store yesterday.

B: Oh yes. I'm planning to give my family an English Christmas dinner when I get home. Do you think I can buy some crackers?

A: You might find some when the shops open again. They'll probably be cheaper too after Christmas.

B: Great. Mmm. This is really delicious.

I'm not sure you should go to Ayer's Rock tomorrow. I mean, it's a great place to visit and the history of the rock and the Aborigines who live there is amazing. The problem is that Ayer's Rock, or Uluru or whatever you want to call it, is so popular that it won't exist soon. All those feet walking on that soft rock and turning it into dust. People are arguing about whose it is or what it should be called but, if they don't do something about it soon, there won't be anything left. I wonder what the Aborigine for `pile of sand' is.

It's a real shame that traditions are changing. When I was little, this was the most exciting day of the year. Nowadays, everyone celebrates the `new' American festival, Halloween, which happens five days before. By the time that's over, no-one wants to have another celebration. It also used to be the big fireworks day but now New Year's Eve has replaced it. It's a shame. It's a real English celebration about an English man and it can help make children interested in their country's history.
