The next lesson will be dedicated to the operation system and software.

Software Categories Activity

TASK: Using the Internet find as MANY different types of software as you can which fall into each of the following categories.

Students will be given a paper sheet to fill out.

Class Activity

Two scenarios displayed. Students will be required to decide what software and hardware they would choose.

Scenario 1.

You have been asked to make a full colour poster to advertise a school disco. The posters will be printed on large A2 sheets of paper.

Answer: Graphics programs/software's, computer (including few components), printer, graphics tablet.

Scenario 2.

You and your friends have been taking loads of video's and photos on your smart phones in the park over the bank holiday weekend and you now want to put it together with a soundtrack to make a funny movie which you intend to upload to You Tube.

Answer: Video creation program, computer (including few components), headphones.

Class Discussion

  • We all know and even used some of the common software's. Are you able to explain in your own words what is software?

Software is a collection of instructions that enable a user to interact with the computer or have the computer perform specific tasks for them. Without software, the computer would be useless.

  • What are the types of computer software?

Application software- The application software is widely used in educational, business and medical fields. Computer games are the most popular forms of application software.

System software - operating system, System software coordinates all external devices of computer system like printer, keyboard, displays etc.

2 students in each group. Groups will be created in order with their seats.

Students will be have time to complete their Operating System chapter in their catalogue which they update each time they will learn something new.

Most of the student's, should be able to fill out their catalogue with a minimum support of the Internet.

Some of the student's will be able to fill out their catalogue using the Internet as their source of knowledge.

Few of the students may don't be able to fill out their catalogues even using the Internet due to their attitude and behaviour.
