Track 4

Teacher: OK, class. Today we're talking about global warming and climate change. I know you've all done a lot of research so let's get started. Wendy, which part of the world did you research?

Wendy: I researched the Antarctic. I did a lot of research on the Internet and I read about the ice melting in that area. I think this is the most serious result of climate change.

Teacher: Oh, I see. Why do you think that Wendy?

Wendy: Well, if the ice melts it will make the oceans rise, which may cause tsunamis. It will also cause floods in many parts of the world.

Teacher: Right, and there were floods here last year, weren't there?

Bill: Yes, there were.

Teacher: And which area did you research Bill?

Bill: I researched the weather in the US. There are lots of television programmes and documentaries about extreme weather in that country.

Teacher: Oh really? What kind of extreme weather did you find out about?

Bill: Well, it's a big country so they suffer all kinds of extreme weather conditions, like heatwaves, storms and downpours, as well as tornadoes and hurricanes!

Teacher: Do you think that the weather there is worse, for example, than in Africa?

Bill: Yes, definitely.

Teacher: Who researched Africa?

Mary: I did and I think it is a continent with very severe weather problems, possibly the worst in the world. For example, in much of Africa there's not enough rain and many countries suffer from drought and famine. If the climate continues to get hotter, a lot of people in Africa will die. In my opinion, this isn't the same as the US where extreme weather conditions happen less frequently.

Teacher: That's an interesting point. Where did you find information about Africa, Mary?

Mary: I read a lot of geography magazines like National Geographic.

Teacher: That's great Mary, thank you. And what about here in Britain? Do you think that the weather is changing here?

Mary: Yes, I think so. It's wetter and colder here in the winter. I think we're getting more snow and hail in the winter and more gales and thunder and lightning. The winters are definitely getting worse. I think it's really frightening.

Teacher: Do the rest of you agree? Yes, Wendy?

Wendy: I agree with Mary that the winters are getting worse but I think that the summers are getting hotter too, which is very worrying.

Bill: That's not worrying, hotter summers are great!

Teacher: Very funny Bill! Thank you everybody. That was excellent.

Track 5

Sarah: So Neil, is everything organised for the party?

Neil: Yes, pretty much, but I think we should discuss which details to include on the tickets and posters.

Sarah: Sure. Let me get a piece of paper. OK, what information do we need to mention?

Neil: Well, we need to include the venue name and address.

Sarah: OK, so what's the name of the club again where the party will be?

Neil: It's Jankins.

Sarah: Right, got that. And what's the address?

Neil: The club is in the town of Castleton, C-A-S-T-L-E-T-O-N. It's on Bond Street, opposite the bus station.

Sarah: Yep. And what's the price of the tickets?

Neil: Um, tickets cost five pounds for students and six pounds for guests but we should mention that the ticket price includes fruit juice and a sandwich.

Sarah: Yes, I've got all that. And I'll also include that each student can only invite two guests, which is very important. Um now, how can students get tickets again?

Neil: Tickets will go on sale from Monday, March the first, and will stay on sale until the end of the month. Students can buy tickets from the school secretary.

Sarah: Right. What about the entertainment? Do you want to mention something about that?

Neil: Yes, definitely. There's a live band called The Tornadoes … and a DJ called Matty Z.

Sarah: What? How do you spell that?

Neil: M-A-T-T-Y. Z.

Sarah: Right, is that everything?

Neil: Yes, I think so … Oh, hang on, we need to mention that the party is only for students aged fourteen to sixteen … And we should also say that the party begins at half past six and ends at eleven o'clock.

Sarah: Good thing we remembered. Nobody would have known when to show up!
