Issues
Activity Individual/pairwork/groupwork
Aim Students practise speaking, expressing opinions about social
issues.
Time 20 minutes
Number of students Any
Before class Photocopy enough worksheets for every student in the class.
Procedure
1 Ask them to read through the statements and check they understand them. Do the
first statement as an example with the whole class. Change the sentence on the
board to Smoking should be banned from all public places where there are
children present , or something else which expresses your opinion. Tell them they
do not have to write a lot and that a single-word change may be appropriate.
2 Students read through each statement changing it so that it represents their own
opinion. They can leave a statement unchanged if it already represents what they
think.
3 In pairs, students compare their answers and rewrite them so that they both agree.
If they cannot agree, tell them to leave that particular statement.
4 Next, organise groups of four by joining two pairs together and tell them to repeat
the process.
5 When they have finished, bring the class back together as a whole group and ask
for some of their opinions.
