Activity Pairwork
Aim Students learn some informal conversational phrases and
practise using them in a game.
Time 15 20 minutes
Number of students Any
Before class Photocopy enough worksheets for each student in the class.
Procedure
1 Give a worksheet to each student in the class. Students match the Openings a l
with a suitable Reply from 1 12.
2 Students decide what the dialogues are about or where they might hear them.
Check the answers to the activity.

a 2 (colleagues in an office)
b 9 (2 people greeting each other)
c 3 (people looking at a map/looking for somewhere)
d 5 (someone buying shoes/boots in a shop)
e 4 (friends discussing exams)
f 8 (a waiter talking to a customer in a restaurant)

Follow-up
3 Put the students into pairs (A and B) and tell them they are going to test each
other. Explain the rules. Student A reads an Opening phrase at random, and
Student B must supply the correct Reply. If B is correct, they win a point. Students
swap over. Student B reads an Opening phrase at random, and Student A supplies
the correct response. If A is correct, they win a point for themselves. The process is
repeated until all the phrases from part A have been read. The student in each pair
with the most points wins
