The most memorable journey I've ever been on was when I was about eleven years old and I travelled around Spain, Portugal and France with my family. My parents loved travelling, and we had always had great holidays in interesting places. But they had always wanted to do a longer trip with us, and my brother and I were getting older so it was going to be more difficult to take time off. Anyway, that summer my parents decided it was now or never, and they took us out of school for three months. We got the train to Toulouse in the south of France, they bought a camper van - you know - one of those Volkswagen camper vans with beds, a cooker and a fridge, and off we went, over the Pyrenees into Spain. They hadn't planned a route or anything, they just decided where to go on a daily basis. We travelled all over Spain and Portugal, over the mountains, along the coast. I have some very vivid memories of sitting on a beach with some of the local fishermen, eating fresh grilled sardines under the stars, somewhere - it must have been in Portugal. And also of playing with children in small towns and villages, where we were always warmly welcomed. It was a great journey, and gave me a love of travel which I still have to this day. In fact, I'm planning to do a similar trip with my own children - if my wife will let me!
