MAKING JOHNNY
4 Colour 90g (3oz) of the modeiling pastę błack. Put askie just under 7g (V.oz) for later ano' then, with the remainder. model a large. rounded teardrop shape and place fiat down on the worksurface. (The deep colour will have madę the modeiling pastę quite soft. so try not to handle it too much.) Press mto the largest end using your finger to open up the neck area of Johnnys t-shirt. Next, push m either side to create smali sockets for his arms to stoi mto. Press the Pottom point of the teardrop fiat to create his wa s! area.
5Johnny‘s body is quite angular. so pinch and stroke gently to create a ndge around the neck area and down the opposite sides Leave the piece to set for around ten minutes and then place ii on its side. supported by a piece of foam sponge. To round off the back. smooth gently with your fingers. indent the spme by pressing in with the side of a paintbrush.
6 Colour 45g (1 Loz) of the modeiling pastę a flesh colour using cream food colouring pastę with a liny amount of red. Using 7g (7«oz). shape his angular head. with the facial area tapenng down much narrower than the top The sides of the face and around the Chin are exiremely angular. so press his face down onto the worksurface to fłatten then again either side of his face. Push a cocktail stick (toothpick) mto the bottom of his head and then remove it. to make a hole for the sugar stick. Put the head aside to dry.
To make the arms. split 22g (7.oz) of the remainmg flesh-coloured modeiling pastÄ™ in hal? Using half. roli into a sausage shape and taper it so that it is narrower at one end. Round off the riarrow end by pmchmg gently a'i the way round to create the wrist Press this rounded end gently to ftatten it slightly to form a hand. Make a cul to one side for the thumb and then make three cuts along the top to separate fingers. Next. pinch the arm gently to lengthen it and bend it round. Push in to mark the elbow and pinch out at the back. Bend this arm mto posilion against the body to achieve the correct pose. then remove it and put it to cne side to altow it to set Make the opposite arm in the same way
Split 7g ( Aoz) of the flesh-coloured modeiling pastę in half and use one half to shape Johnny‘s neck and shouder area. Press this into the recess at his neck and smooth it so it fils neatly. Secure it with sugar glue. Push the sugar stick down through the neck and body*. te3ving at least 2.5cm (1in) protrudmg from the top to help support the head later.
Colour just o‘/er 7g (’Aoz) of the modeiling pastę biue. Put a pea-sized amount of this aside. and then use the rest of it to make the trousers First.
roli the pastę into a (ong. teardrop shape and make a out to separate the two tegs. Mark the knees by pmchmg hatfway up and push in at the back. Bend one leg up to rest on the other and then press the top of the legs straight at the waist and stick them m place against Johnny's body. smoothing the top and trousers together secureiy. Use the piece that was set aside eartier to make Johnny’s trouser turn-ups.
