Summary
The stability criteria assure the safety of ship operation at sea. The criteria prepared by IMO and the rules of the Classification Societies are the base for the estimation of the ship safety. However, because of the various conditions of sea environment, the contplex estimation of the vessel safety belongs to the ship master. The stability criteria limits are worked out on the basis of many years' research and statistical analysis of accidents. Although, the obtained knowledge is helpful for the safety enhancement, the stability accidents are of very dijferent origin. The paper present the estimation methods of ship stability based on the stability rules and operational experience. The paper also contains the analysis of ship stability according to the dijferent loading conditions met during the ship life.
