Report of the event as a witness

On Thursday after work I went to the Silesia Bank to draw out some money. It must have been about five o'clock p.m. because I had heard a signal coming from my watch just several seconds earlier.

I was standing in a queue waiting my turn, when suddenly two men, wearing black balaclava on their heads carrying sub-machine guns came into the bank. Both men were tall and muscular. One of them had a strange accent which reminded me Russian language. This man ordered all people inside the bank to lay down on the floor. Afterwards the second man pointed his gun at one of the cashier and demanded money. I noticed also another man who was waiting outside in a silver AUDI 100. The cashier appeared to be very brave and refused giving out money. Moreover, she must have pressed the button of the alarm because the police arrived at the bank in three minutes after gangsters.

Both gangsters were caught by the police but the third, who was inside the AUDI, disappeared. I noticed that he drove off in the direction of the airport. I remembered that rear left light of this car was broken.

Letter of apology

Dear Mr Johnson,

Please accept my sincerest apologies for my not being able to work on Friday March 22nd. I realise how much this must have upset you, and I am really conscious of responsibility for our precious contract, which would be broken because of my absence.

I was driving to work when I receive a message by mobile phone that my elder son had been involved in an accident, and he was sent to hospital. I was frightened because he was unconscious and his leg was broken. I had to go to the hospital to see him. I tried to phone you several times but the line was engaged for a long time.

I am convinced that I will be able make up my mistake. I have already phoned our customer and I invited him to dinner on Monday. He assured me that he was still ready to sign a contract for his product sale.

Once again, my sincerest apologies for the embarrassment I caused.

Yours sincerely

Letter accepting an invitation

Dear Debbie,

Thanks for the invitation to your birthday party on May 16th. Rita and I were really pleased to receive it. The party in your picturesque cottage at the lake together with all our old friends sounds lovely. We are so excited and of course we'd love to come. Especially our children were impressed when they learned that they were invited too.

I will bring our favourite, old hits of the 70s and some CDs with the latest sounds. It has already been about 5 years since we saw each other, so it will be great to get together, and catch up all the news, drinking and dancing at the good music.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can bring or anything I can do to help.

Once again, thanks for the invitation, and see you on 16th.

Love Rita and Christopher

A letter to the airline describing an item which was left

I am writing to inquire about an item which I left on the board of one of your planes. On Thursday, 16th March I was on the flight 302 to Tokyo. When I arrived at the hotel, I realised that I left my suitcase in the overhead bin.

It was an elegant, medium-sized, quite new, rectangular, black suitcase with a code lock. The suitcase was made of genuine leather, and there was a stamp of famous English firm on the top left-hand corner, and next to handle, there was a small label with my Polish address and phone number.

It is urgent matter for me because there were very important documents inside the suitcase.

In the event of the suitcase being found, I can be contacted on 882350 from 7.00 to 10.00 p.m. every day at the Tower Hotel in Tokyo.

Yours sincerely

I would appreciate it if you could send me some information including details concerning length of temporary jobs, payment and working conditions. I have enclosed a copy of my CV. You may contact me at my home address. I would be glad to attend an interview at any time convenient to you.

Yours faithfully

Dear Mr and Mrs Williams,

I read your advertisement in „Gazeta Wyborcza” and I am very interested in your offer.

I have got a sixteen-year-old daughter who is a secondary school student. She has been learning German for five years and I would like to have an exchange for her with a German girl from Munich or the area around Munich for two or three weeks of July.

We live in Zegrze near the lake and we are all keen on sailing so it would be great if you could find someone with the same hobby.

We have good accommodation conditions so we can invite a German school-girl during the summer holidays for three weeks. Both, my wife and I speak German a little.

I would be grateful if you could send me further information including details of the cost of the exchange. Please let me know if you need more information.

Yours sincerely

Advantages and disadvantages of living in a block of flats

More and more modern blocks of flats is being built now days. It is dream of many young couples to have a flat of their own. But are they really happy when they finally move to the flat of their dreams? Is living in a block of flats really so convenient for people?

The first argument for living in a block of flats is, that it makes us feel secure. So it is the best solution for old people who live alone because there is always someone nearby to help them. What is more, maintenance costs are very low because you share them with the others in your block so it seems to be convenient for not too rich people. In addition, nearby new housing estates there are usually big city centres, which are very important because shopping is main part of our daily life.

On the other hand, living in the block of flats has some disadvantages too. There is no garden and the children have to spend all day inside the flat. Moreover, sometimes it can be noisy and you can hear everything your neighbours are doing. Finally, living on the third or fourth floor in a block of flats without a lift can be really onerous, especially for the old people.

To sum up, living in the block of flats can be quite convenient for temporary people but if you are rich you should think about a lovely detach house of your own.

Advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones

Mobil phones seen to be indispensable in our lives. Since they were invented they have revolutionised the way millions of people work, conduct business transactions or manage their companies. But will mobile phones replace soon our normal telephones?

First of all mobile phones are very useful for people who are often on the move. They can easily be contacted no matter where they are. Moreover, having a mobile phone increases your personal security. If you find yourself in a dangerous situation, you can call for help no matter where you are. In addition, mobile phones are being increasingly used in business where quick decisions making and sending them as soon as possible is very important issue.

On the other hand, using mobile phones can be dangerous. Talking by them while driving reduces concentration by up to 30% and so greatly increases the chances of causing an accident. What is more, from the medical point of view, mobile phones are unhealthy because of their radiation. Finally, some people claim that owing a mobile phone is a waste of money. The basic charge for the service is much higher than for a normal telephone, and the calls are extremely expensive.

In conclusion, taking into consideration all arguments for and against, we cannot imagine the world today without mobile phones. They have become one of the most powerful forces in modern society. Everyone will probably agree that the future of our society depends greatly on very fast communications.

For and against using of cars

When asked about safety of cars most people think about traffic accident. But have you ever thought about dangers cars pose to the environment?

Every years thousands of people are killed and hundreds of thousands are seriously injured in car accidents. Without doubt the most terrifying fact is that a very high proportion of these victims are children and teenagers. According to various estimates, the costs of road accidents are inordinately high. However, human tragedy can never be meaningfully respected by accurate calculations.

Moreover cars are unfriendly to the environment. Carbon monoxide, which is mostly produced by motor vehicles, can, even in small doses, cause sickness and slowing of the reflexes and there is strong evidence to show that it has an effect on the growth of children.

On the other hand, we cannot imagine the world today without a car. The motor vehicle has become one of the most powerful forces in modern society. Its increased use has numerous benefits. Humans enjoy greater freedom of movement and greater speed of travel than ever before.

In conclusion, cars may be a serious threat to human life. However, how many drivers will be willing to abandon this convenience, which is now no longer a luxury but a necessity for most?

Car accidents

Every year thousands of people are killed and hundreds of thousands are seriously injured in car accidents. Without doubt the most terrifying fact is that a very high proportion of these victims are children and teenagers. What makes this continuous waste of human life even more shocking is the fact that so many road tragedies could be prevented.

Experts say that the main factors responsible for such a high death-toll are: driving too fast, alcohol, too little practice in driving, irresponsibility and taking unnecessary risks. Probably the most dangerous of all these factors is driving under the influence of alcohol. Although many young people delude themselves that a slight intoxication is harmless, research shows that the risk of causing an accidents after two beers increases as many as four times.

On the other hand, children should be subject to some form of safety education as survival in modern traffic conditions demands a mass of knowledge and a variety of skills which are frequently tragically taken for granted.

To sum up, at present we cannot imagine the world without a car, but society must acknowledge that responsible safety in traffic depends on learned behaviour. Cars are not one of the most serious threat to human life - the drivers are.

Dear Mrs Parker

I am writing to complain about the product I have received from your company. I have bought a special type of Tv-set which is called Panasonic-750TLX in your shop Klif last month.

I decided to buy a new type of a TV-set in your market because your offer seemed very attractive. Your advertisements were very convincing and I was convinced that just your products are the best. These were main reasons why I bought this TV.

Now, I am disappointed, because after two days of being used it broke down. The voice and colours disappeared. Of course before plugging the TV in I had read the instruction very carefully. When I went to the shop where I bought it to complain the salesman told me that it was my fault.

I would like to add I have been your customer for twenty years and I have always been sure about your reliability and that you have good quality products. Now I do not know what I should think about your company and products but I hope that you can solve this problem.

I look forward to receiving some information from you. I would appreciate if you could send it as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely.

Moreover I know French fluently and German a little. I am also a swimming and aerobic instructor. I am interested in history and painting.
