This long tubę. sometimes called an l-cord. >s knitted on two doubłe-pointed needles. usmg two sizes smaller than normalły used for the yam.
Cast on four stitches and knit one row. Do not tum the work but instead push the stitches to the other end of the needle. Swap the nght-hand needle with the łeft-hand needle. puli up the yam and knit the four stitches agam. Repeat for every row. By pullmg the yam up at the end of the row. the edges of the knittmg are pulled together and a tubę is formed. Cast on three stitches for a fi ner cord. and frve stitches for a thKker one. Pipmg cord can be threaded through the knitted cord for a firmer edgmg for cushions or as the handle for a bag.
The inursia cushion (sec page 154) uses a knitted cord to trim the edges.
Strands of yam twisted together will form a cord. The morę strands you use. the thicker the cord will be. Cut lengths of yam three times the fimshed length required and tie them together with a knot at each end. Hook one end over a doorknob or hook. and holding the other knotted end. stand back so that the strands are taut Insert a penol mto the end and wind it to twist the strands. Keep the strands taut as you wind. twistmg until the cord starts to fold up
and twist around itsełf. Keepmg the cord taut. nemove the end from the doorknob and bnng both knotted ends together. The cord wiH twist around itsełf. Ask someone to hołd the middle or hang a weight from a hook on the middle of the cord to hołd it taut as it twists. Smali tassełs can be madę at either end by knottmg the strands. cuttmg the looped end and then untymg the knots from the other end. A textured cord is madę by combmmg different yams or cołours.
