CANYAS
♦ Cut the canvas, allowing a border of 5 cm (2 in). Bind the edges - see Carwas, page 138. The suggested height can easily be altered but to maintain the pattern, the width needs to be retained.
♦ Outline the shape of the design with a waterproof indelible marker, marking 2.5 cm (1 in) for the top pattern strip and 5 cm (2 in) for each of the four separate side pattern strips.
♦ Spray paint the canvas medium brown to unify any color showing through.
FOLLOWING THE CHART
♦ This design contains many traditional pattems. Its motifs are uncomplicated and, once the pattern is established, all subsequent rows follow clearly.
♦ The chart shows the basie design for this bag and should be repeated as necessary to complete the example stitched.
♦ Following the stitch chart work the center piece first, beginning at the bottom right-hand corner until each horizontal row of this section is complete.
♦ Finish the lower half of the stitching first, reversing the canvas to complete the upper half. Then complete all four border pattems one at a time, stitching from bottom to top. Stitch the border across the top of the design.
♦ On a separate strip of canvas, stitch the surrounding gusset.
♦ When stitching the bag, after the main section A is completed, the suggested stitching order is as follows:
on the left side, stitch section C first,
followed by section B
on the right side, stitch section D first,
followed by section E
the surrounding gusset (section F) should
be stitched separately, to be attached
when the bag is sewn together
♦ The border design across the top of the bag is optional.
STITCHING
♦ For instructions, see Stitching, page 138.
♦ Use two strands of Madeira Renaissance Wool doubled. Use Madeira Viscona as supplied.
MAKING THE CARPET BAG
♦ For durability, strips of canvas have been placed inside the chenille fabric straps. The carpet bag itself is lined in taupe brown fabric.
♦ Unless skilled in making up, it is recommended that the Gypsy Carpet Bag is completed by a professional seamstress or upholsterer - see Suppliers’ addresses, page 141.
